The French Naval Commandos units are under command of the Force Maritime des Fusiliers Marins et Commandos (FORFUSCO) in Lorient. It is headed by an officer with the title of Commandement des Fusiliers Marins et Commandos (COFUSCO).The naval SF units are the Marine Commandos ( Commandos de Marine). These aredivided into five units (fr: commandos. The term commando can mean both unit and soldier):Hubert, Jaubert, Trepel, De Penfentenyo and De Montfort. The total number of all thesecommandos (soldier) is approx. 500 members. Each commando (unit) is composed of about 80 men,divided into four sections with 20 elements each.‧ Jaubert: Assault at sea, exfiltration, fight in enclosed spaces at sea. ‧ Trepel: Assault at sea, exfiltration. ‧ de Penfentenyo: Reconnaissance, intelligence operations. ‧ de Montfort: Distance neutralisation, special back-ups. ‧ Hubert: Submarine action, combat divers. + the GCMC: Groupe de Combat en Milieu Clos ("Combat Group in Closed Areas"), naval counter-terrorism. created in 1994.This group, like the B-section of the Commando Hubert is trained for naval assault missions; for example the releasing of vessels taken in control by terrorists.All of these commandos, except for Hubert, are located in Lorient. Commando Hubert is situated in Saint Mandrier.
Add around 1000 fusiliers marins ("naval rifleman") in charge of the security of french vessels and navals bases.
The French Navy special forces component is made up of five "Commandos", a Commando being a company-sized unit in this case.
